Salvation according to the romanist

In the catholic view salvation is partially granted by God. In addition, every sinner has to earn his salvation by good works. This is definitely different to the reformed and biblical view of salvation.
But when it comes to salvation by Christ alone (sola christus), the romanist view is 100% diametrical to the Bible

some thoughts on Sin

The natural man asks: 

why did God create evil if he is omnipotent and if he is a good God at the same time 

Is he then not omnipotent? 

why cant he just forgive ? 

There is evil - true. But just because we dont see reason in evil 

does not mean that God is evil or that he is not omnipotent 

He cannot forgive because he is a good God. And he is a just God. 

So he punishes the wicked. 

Why did he then make men in the first place knowing given the 

fact that he is omniscient. 

Because creation is eschatological and by creating us he has already 

redeemed us by his own blood and the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. 

This is to show us his eternal love and sovereign grace. 

How can we be culpable if he is sovereign ? 

We are sinners therefore we sin. 

However, we freely sin and we choose to be Gods on our own every day. 

Therefore we are culpable and fully responsible. And yet it is he chooses. 

For modern man this antinomy will never be grasped 

and it is only the regenerate mind which understands and accept it 

the lamb of God

The story of the destroyer that kills all firstborn 

while the Israelites were in Egypt tells us a great truth. 

The scripture says that every firstborn will be killed 

unless the blood of the lamb has not been put on the 

door of each house. 

THis would even mean death for the Israelites' firstborn 

children. It is only if they have the blood of the lamb 

at their doors that the destroyer won't kill them. 

So even their religion, their ethnicity won't pass them from 

the divine judgement. God is absolutely equal here. 

Those who have hear the message and would not have 

believed would have been condemned. 

It is the substitution of the lamb that prevents them from 

being killed. And this can only be because of their belief 

in the message brought to them by Moses. 

However, this lamb only covers them from being killed on this

earth. It is only through the substitutionary atonement 

of Jesus Christ that the debt of our sin is taken away 

and we are freed from sin in eternity

To think that objects have a determinant nature and that is why they

i recently watched a youtube video on 50 of the finest scientists commenting the existence of God. 

All of them said more or less the same. Faith is belief in absence of evidence. And since there is

no evidence for the existence of God, there simply is no God. 

Jesus understood this very well and said (Matthew 12:38-39) 

38 Then certain of the scribes and Pharisees answered him, saying, Teacher, we would see a sign from thee.

Its basically miracles that break some sort of natural law.

the absolute necessity of regeneration

In the past couple of days i have been reading and listenting 

to christian apologetics. 

Apologetics argue as evidentialists - meaning, that it is the least problematic - taking reason or logic to believe in a God 

or they argue as presuppositionalists, showing that the non-believer actually is inconsistent in his thinking and not believing in the God of the Bible is a worldview which does not carry any foundation of the intelligibility of knowledge, meaning and life. 

At the end, it more or less comes from different directions whereas the arguing of the evidentialist 

is definitely more problematic than the argument of the impossibility of the contrary - meaning there cannot be not a God therefore God is. 

In any case, it is only the regeneration of the Holy Spirit that is the prerequisite of the being saved 

The non-believer will be frustrated either way (by both apologetic approaches) but nevertheless will not be able to save him self 

as it is said in Romans, there is none who understands and there is none who is wise. 

So at the end, arguing with the unbeliever makes sense when we defend our faith, but will never regenerate him.

Judging God

The natural man constantly judges God for letting things 

happen on this planet such as sufferings, natural catastrophies etc. 

On the other hand the natural man hates being influenced or determined

by God as this would certainly violate his free will. And of course, 

free will has become sort of the summon bonum of human society 

which no the sinner would ever want to sacrifice even for the eternal 

and almighty God. 

Today, while driving to work i heard an interesting podcast by Greg 

Bahnsen. Dr. Bahnsen was discussing the matter of the sinner criticizing

and judging God, not understanding and accepting that it is man who 

sits on the bench and God who is the ultimate judge. 

By blaming God, the natural man puts himself in a position the other 

way around. Bahnsen quotes the reason why he does that. The answer 

can be found in the Bible of course. Job 40:8 

"Wilt thou even annul my judgment? Wilt thou condemn me, that thou 

mayest be justified?"

The natural wants to be justified. And in judging God, he justifies 

himself !

In the romanists, thomistic view being is universal so that both God and man are both defined by it. "thus human free will is partly independent and so partly even independent over God (note from Edgar), with the result that revelation cannot truly originate in God and be received by man"

Van Til really nails it again . The problem with the roman church is actually that it rests on a fundamentally flawed and heretic view originated in Kant, Aquinas and Aristotle

That is the reason why it is only consequential in its own heretic thinking that it says it can be possible to be saved without Christ as stated in the Vatican catechism 1260

1260 "Since Christ died for all, and since all men are in fact called to one and the same destiny, which is divine, we must hold that the Holy Spirit offers to all the possibility of being made partakers, in a way known to God, of the Paschal mystery." Every man who is ignorant of the Gospel of Christ and of his Church, but seeks the truth and does the will of God in accordance with his understanding of it, can be saved. It may be supposed that such persons would have desired Baptism explicitly if they had known its necessity."

personal comment.
i think Van Til is utterly right. His explain so many flaws we had as unbelievers. this also explains Paul's statement that there is none that seeks God. that there is no one who understands God.
we can " philisophize" until dawn as unbelievers unless the Holy Spirit regenerates us, we will always start with human logic and never presuppose God. But it is only after we are converted that we understand grace, knowing God based on a creator creature distinction. As we should never forget knowledge of truth is something that God grants to the believer. See 2.Timothy 2:25

Enjoy your life ?

Amazing. It has been twice this week, that two different persons mention in front of me:
"Life is short, you really really have to enjoy it and all of its precious moments before you get old."

It reminds me of statements like:"live your life as if today was your last day".

It confirms to me again that the natural man has no hope in and out of himself but place his meaning just on PAST memories. In our state of being separated from God (which Christians call "fallen state" or the state of being a sinner) we glorify ourselves but God, since we simply put our lives at the center of our own beings rather than our creator. So the natural consequence is actually to say: Enjoy life, because it's the only thing you have!

If you get to know God, which means understanding or getting to understand that you are a sinner (and that cannot be by definition be originated in and out of yourself) you automatically place your being centered in God. And since God is God, supernatural, eternal, omniscient and omnipotent, you automatically have hope in an eternal state. This can only happen if you are reconciled with him. And that happens by faith alone in an historical act that atoned for your sins. The cross of Jesus Christ.

I might fear dying, but i shall not fear death anymore, since eternity starts from the moment you are being saved and are adopted as child of God into the eternal kingdom of Jesus Christ by the Holy Spirit.

Inerrancy and authority of Scripture

Jesus quotes from Psalm 82:6. From Van Til:"this proves that the term law was for Jesus' purpose identical with scripture as a whole. And of this law, or Scripture, Jesus then says that it cannot be broken. It is therefore the final court appeal. Any passage of scripture must acc. to Jesus be thought of as having "irrefragable authority"." page 248 Systematic Theology

Inspiration of Scripture

Cornelius Van Til:
"Unless as sinners we have an absolutely inspired bible, we have no absolute God interpreting reality for us, and unless we have an absolute God interpreting reality for us, there is no true interpretatn at all." p.243

Mental Models

When somebody asks you: is F A or B, and you don't know the answer, immediately, you start to think in "either or mode". So it is either A or B. The funny thing is, we miss 50% of solutions. It could be neither A nor B or it could be both A and B.
Why is that so ? In case you do not have any information about neither A nor B, you automatically assume that they are exclusive. So you try to think about what could be reasons for A or B. So lack of knowledge most of the time leads to exclusion of either the one or other option. I think, it is fair to call this an example of a mental model.

When you ask people on the street if God is transcendent or immanent which is a tough question to ask (w/o considering the "i dont know" answer) most people will opt for either transcendent, meaning: He is above us, and some people saying: I feel him everyday, therefore he is immanent. When in fact, he is both.

Unless you are challenged to think about a subject matter in great detail, you will be kept captive in mental model mode. Meaning, you won't understand that it could be both or none of the given options. Since we are - in our daily pace - keep things the way they are , and that is very true for our brain activities, most of the time we will not break out of our mental models. We will be kept in our intellectual comfort zone. This will largely influence our volitional aspects of our life.

Der Sündenfall ist unsere Verantwortung als Mensch. Durch unsere Sünden bestätigen wir dies.
Es ist Gottes Gnade, die hier offenbart wird, s. Epheser 2:4-7

Der Mensch hat zwei Probleme

1. Er ist Sünder
und muss für sich für die Schuld seiner Sünden verantworten
2. Sündhafte Natur
Dadurch dass er Sünder ist, ist er Sklave der Sünde. Er kann

Einheit mit Christus bedeutet Rechtfertigung (Justification)
und Heiligung (Sanctification), so dass beide Probleme gelöst sind

Krankheit und Glaube

Wenn wir krank werden, erwägen wir vielleicht manchmal die Möglichkeit, dass wir bestraft werden. Dies wäre jedoch ein fatalistisches Weltbild. Ich denke eher (eher!, nicht immer!), das Gegenteil ist der Fall.
Gott ließ zu, dass Satan, Hiob mit Krankheiten regelrecht überflutete.

Krankheit:
- zeigt mir auf, dass ich absolut in Gottes Hand bin. Weder das Entstehen noch die Heilung sind in meiner Macht
- Krankheit macht mich demütig.
- Krankheit macht mich dankbar, ich muss mir immer vor Augen halten, das Christus mir durch seine Opfer am Kreuz bereits alles gegeben hat. Wenn ich geheilt werde, ist die Dankbarkeit noch grösser
- Krankheit gebietet uns als Christen, Kraft nicht aus uns selbst heraus zu schöpfen, sondern aus der Kraft des Heiligen Geistes.

Darum habe ich Wohlgefallen an Schwachheiten, an Mißhandlungen, an Nöten, an Verfolgungen, an Ängsten um des Christus willen; denn wenn ich schwach bin, dann bin ich stark.

Menschliche Verantwortung und Prädestination

Tim Keller bringt es wieder auf den Punkt.
Auch die Prädestinationslehre bricht nicht mit "freien" Willem.

Er vergleicht die Lehre der Erwählung mit folgendem Bild:
Eine Menge von Menschen, deren Augen verbunden sind, laufen
in Richtung eines Feuerbeckens (egal was genommen wird).
Jemand schreit ihnen zu, dass dies der Fall ist. Doch die
meisten erwidern."Unsinn, wir sind auf dem Weg zum Strand
und spüren schon wie es wärmer wird".
Nun geht Gott (für seine eigene Verherrlichung) und reisst
einigen (den Erwählten) die Augenbinden ab. Diese haben nun
freien Willen sich für Gott zu entscheiden.

Unsere natürliche Reaktion ist: Warum macht er es nicht für alle?
Nun, weil er a. Nicht dazu verpflichtet ist und b.wir nicht
in der Position sind, Gott zu kritisieren oder zu verurteilen.

Wenn man nun die Betrachtung nur auf diejenigen richtet, die die
Warnung ignorieren. Sind sie verantwortlich! Ja, auf jeden Fall!
Genauso wie alle Menschen verantwortlich für ihre Reaktion auf
das Hören des Evangeliums sind.

Diejenigen, denen Gott die Augen öffnet, finden zu Gott. D.h.
Gott schickt Menschen nicht per se (deterministisch) in die
Hölle, wohl aber jene in sein Reich, die er erwählt.

Wie Ligon Duncan in einem Interview bemerkt sind, wir als Sünder
verantwortlich, weil wir täglich gegen Gott rebellieren.
Und wir zeigen es ihm durch unsere sündhaften Taten, die auf
der freien Wahl basieren, uns selbst zu verherrlichen statt ihn.

Die einzige Lösung auf diesen sündhaften Zustand ist das Kreuz
Jesu Christi, die Gnade Gottes.

Auf dieses Verhältnis antworten wir nur auf Gehorsam ggü dem Wort Gottes
Selbst Paulus unterzeichnet dies: Galater 2:20
Ich bin mit Christus gekreuzigt; und nun lebe ich, aber nicht mehr ich [selbst], sondern Christus lebt in mir. Was ich aber jetzt im Fleisch lebe, das lebe ich im Glauben an den Sohn Gottes, der mich geliebt und sich selbst für mich hingegeben hat.

Wir sind verantwortlich für unsere Sünde und Unglauben!

Über Vergebung

Vergebung ist eines der schwierigsten emotionalen/willensmässigen Unterfangen

Besonders, wenn derjenige der mir Leid zugefügt hat, mich noch nicht mal Vergebung gebeten hat. Dennoch ist die Ansage von Jesus eindeutig:

Markus 11:25-26
"Und wenn ihr dasteht und betet, so vergebt, wenn IHR etwas gegen jemand habt, damit auch euer Vater im Himmel euch eure Verfehlungen vergibt. Wenn ihr aber nicht vergebt, so wird auch euer Vater im Himmel eure Verfehlungen nicht vergeben."

Und wenn jemand etwas gegen MICH vorzubringen hat, sagt Jesus in
Matthäus 5:23-24
"Wenn du nun deine Gabe zum Altar bringst und dich dort erinnerst, daß dein Bruder etwas gegen dich hat, so laß deine Gabe dort vor dem Altar und geh zuvor hin und versöhne dich mit deinem Bruder, und dann komm und opfere deine Gabe!"

D.h. Jesus verlangt in jedem Fall von uns, dass wir die Initiative ergreifen.

HIer einige Gedanken:

1. Vergebung braucht Zeit
2. In bestimmten Situationen bedeutet Vergebung das Vermeiden von Strafe
3. Wenn ich nicht vergebe, kann ich evtl. bestrafen. oder ich vergebe und bestrafe nicht. Wenn ich bestrafe, ändert dies nicht an dem bereits durch das Leid hervorgerufenen Zustand.
Wenn ich vergebe, absorbiere ich den Schmerz. Es ist ein Opfer. Und deswegen ein Zeichen von wirklicher Nächstenliebe.
4. Vergebung ist ein Geschenk, denn als derjenige der Leid zufügt, kann ich nicht erwarten, dass der Leidtragende, trotz meiner Entschuldigung mir vergibt. Damit entlaste ich nicht nur ihn, sondern gebe ihm auch eine Chance "ein besserer Mensch zu werden".

Altar Rufe - unbiblisch

Dr. Martyn Lloyd Jones hat dazu folgendes gesagt:
"The truth is presented to the mind which moves the heart and that moves the will"

Es ist der Heilige Geist, der durch das Wort spricht und unsere Herzen bewegt.
Hierzu benötigen wir keinen psychologischen Gruppendruck, der emotional versucht,
die Leute anzusprechen und zu einer Erneuerung förmlich "nötigt"

Deswegen bin ich Charismatikern gegenüber eher kritisch eingestellt.

Genesis 1 und 2 zwei Schöpfungsberichte ?

Von liberalen Theologen in der Schule wurde uns oftmals berichtet, dass es sich bei Genesis 1 und 2 um zwei Schöpfungsberichte handelt. Die Sprache sei anders als auch die Inhalte.

Dies hält Tim Keller für falsch. Unterschiedlich ist auf jeden Fall das Genre. Bei Genesis 1 handelt es sich um einen Gesang. (mit Wiederholungen wie "und Gott sah dass es gut war"), während dieses Stilmittel in der Genesis 2 nicht auftaucht.

Vers 12
Und die Erde brachte Gras und Gewächs hervor, das Samen trägt nach seiner Art, und Bäume, die Früchte bringen, in denen ihr Same ist nach ihrer Art. Und Gott sah, daß es gut war

Vers 14
Und Gott sprach: Es sollen Lichter an der Himmelsausdehnung sein, zur Unterscheidung von Tag und Nacht, die sollen als Zeichen dienen und zur Bestimmung der Zeiten und der Tage und Jahre,

Vers 16-18
Und Gott machte die zwei großen Lichter, das große Licht zur Beherrschung des Tages und das kleinere Licht zur Beherrschung der Nacht; dazu die Sterne. 17Und Gott setzte sie an die Himmelsausdehnung, damit sie die Erde beleuchten 18und den Tag und die Nacht beherrschen und Licht und Finsternis scheiden

Hier ist deutlich, dass es sich nicht um eine Berichterstattung handeln kann, denn für Vegetation (Vers 12) ist eine Atmosphäre wie in 14+16-18 beschrieben ist, vonnöten.

Genesis 2:5 geht genau von dieser Ordnung aus
Es war aber noch kein Strauch des Feldes gewachsen auf der Erde, noch irgend ein Kraut auf dem Feld; denn Gott der Herr hatte es noch nicht regnen lassen auf der Erde,...

d.h. ab Genesis 2 können wir von einem historischen Bezug sprechen, während Genesis 1 einen Gesangscharakter hat.

D.h. wir wissen eig. nicht viel wie Gott die Welt geschaffen hat und können "mikro"-evolutionistische Prozesse nicht ausschliessen - als Instrument Gottes.

Lediglich, dass er alles geschaffen hat und dass es gut war, und die Schöpfung im Menschen endete, das steht zumindest im Vordergrund

Jesus der Richter

Jesus ist nicht gekommen zu richten, sondern zu erlösen. Und trotzdem ist er jetzt schon Richter, denn wir wissen, dass er uns richten wird. D.h. seine Vorankündigung macht ihr bereits zu dem, was er sein wird und in unserem Bewusstsein dementsprechend bereits ist, auch wenn er es zum damaligen Zeitpunkt nicht als seine primäre Rolle ansah, denn er kam als Erlöser.

Jesus kann Richter sein, denn er wurde gerichtet, für uns am Kreuz

Deswegen kann er sagen

Matth 11:28-30
Kommt her zu mir alle, die ihr mühselig und beladen seid, so will ich euch erquickend! Nehmt auf euch mein Joche und lernt von mir, denn ich bin sanftmütig und von Herzen demütig; so werdet ihr Ruhe finden für eure Seelen! Denn mein Joch ist sanft und meine Last ist leicht.

Und da wir in ihm gerichtet sind, lastet auf uns auch keine Bürde, kein Druck
kein Erfolgsdruck, kein Druck uns zu beweisen, zu zeigen, dass wir gut sind,
oder fähig, in der Lage sind etwas nachhaltiges, ewiges zu vollbringen.

Deswegen kann Jesus auch unser Richter sein, denn dadurch dass er für uns gerichtet wurde, hat er das alleinige Recht.

Das Kreuz gibt uns Frieden, denn Gott sieht uns jetzt gerechtfertigt.

It needs a person like Francis Collins to kind of drag things out of his heart / mind and getting him to the point where he more or less admitted that he can be a NON-atheist.

Although he published a new book, i think what he constantly is trying to refer to is are the people focused on religion/morality and law as opposed to the true gospel, faith and love (as reformed theology is teaching ;)

I think his new book even show that he is a religious person himself trying to evangelize people not to believe in christianity and other religions.

but again, deep inside his heart, God has revealed himself already as this interview years ago has shown

auch wenn selbstverstaendlich sola scriptura gilt, muessen wir uns gedanken machen, warum unsere glaubensvaeter im athanasischem und apolostolischen glaubensbekenntinis darauf aufmerksam machen wollen, dass Jesus in der Tat die Qualen der Hölle erduldet hat
und nicht nur physischen Tod.
Abgesehen von Jesus Schockzustand, Blutschweiss ( Lukas und wikipedia) sind folgende bibeltsellen indiz hierfuer
1. Matth 12:30 - verweis auf Jonas, der 3 tage und Naechte im herzen der erde war.
2. jesaja53:10-11. Hier ist deutlich das Leid der Seele Jesum erwaehnt
3. psalm 23:4. wir brauchen keine angst vor dem tod zu haben
